CEDAR SPRINGS - On a cold and blustery morning at Cedar Chase Golf Club (Designed by W. Bruce Matthews III, 6780 yds, Par 72) the Rockford Rams boys varsity golf team played host to 13 teams from around the state in their annual RAM Invitational.
The Rams, who finished second at the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals a year ago, were able to stave off the competition by carding a team score of 327. Taking a close second with a team score of 329 was Spring Lake, followed by Mattawan, who fired a team score of 334.
In extremely difficult scoring conditions, with winds approaching 25 mph, the Rams were led by junior Nate Barton, who carded an 80, followed closely by sophomore, CJ Stephan with an 81. Senior Nick Rupert, and University of Michigan commit Kevin Healy, rounded out the scoring for Rockford, each carding an 83, respectively.
“Overall, we are happy to win our own invite, though we did not play well,” said head coach, Joel Siegel. “The scoring conditions were difficult with the wind, but we have room for improvement. We are looking forward to the next couple of weeks. We will continue to practice hard and improve on what needs work.”
Taking individual medalist honors on the day was Nick Krueger from Spring Lake High School, who fired an impressive 73.
The Rams golf team will be in action again on Tuesday, April 16, in an OK Red Conference match hosted by Grand Haven at The Meadows Golf Course, on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
