Rams Claim six of nine flights on way to share of conference title

The sun was just skimming the horizon, Saturday morning, May 11, when the Rockford varsity tennis team loaded up the vans for the ride to East Kentwood. There wasn’t much of the usual chatter during the 30-minute drive. With a share of the OK Red Conference Title on the line, the players were quietly focused on the job they needed to do.

They knew it wouldn’t be easy.

Just two days earlier, Rockford ended the regular season with a 5-4 loss to rival West Ottawa. This was their chance at redemption.

It didn’t take their opponents long to realize they meant business.

The Rams pulled out all the stops and game after game, point by point, they kept winning.

The last three matches of the day went down to the wire – and Rockford swept all three.

The Rams wond six of the nine flights and the overall tournament with 57 points, claiming a share of the OK Red Conference Crown.

West Ottawa landed second, Hudsonville third, followed by Caledonia, East Kentwood, Grandville, and Grand Haven.

Saturday’s win was the sixth girls conference title for head coach Tom Huizing, who says he’s proud to lead such a strong group.

“It’s been a great honor working with such dedicated players and families,” he shares. “All the tennis accolades that have been earned are because of the efforts of present and past generations of tennis families here at Rockford. I’m humbled to be part of a rich and growing tradition of tennis excellence with Rockford.”

It was a day of celebration for the Rams – but, there is still work to be done. The ladies head to the MHSAA Regionals this week, looking for another victory and a spot at the State Finals.
