Ericka VanderLende earns title of champion in 1600 and 3200

KENTWOOD – The RHS girls track & field team faced a field that represented 51 schools and the top runners in Michigan at the MHSAA D1 Track & Field State Finals, Saturday, June 1. The competitors faced less than ideal conditions as they not only battled each other, but a sky that sent down plenty of rain to make for a wet track and lightning delays that would cool them off just when they had started to warm up. Despite the inclement weather the Rams were able to register some PRs on the big day at a time it was most needed.

All year long the team had stitched together impressive performances to claim a number of key meets, including the OK Red, their Regional, and the MITCA Team State Finals and this was the culmination of their season. The top three finishers were incredibly close, with Oak Park earning the title with 74 points, followed by Detroit Renaissance in second with 71, and Rockford in third with 69. East Kentwood followed in fourth with 42 points and Ann Arbor Pioneer placed in fifth with 30 points to round out the top five finishers.

Senior Ericka VanderLende ran three events. She was crowned State champion in the 1600m run with a time of 4:41.00 and also in the 3200m run with a time of 10:24.57. Ericka also placed second place in the 800m run with a PR and a time of 2:11.32,

Ram junior Taylor Korytkowski had a big day, registering two individual PRs and four medals. Taylor earned a second place in the 200m with a PR of 24.63, claimed fourth in the 400m with a PR time of 56.25, and was a leg in the 4x200 relay team that finished third and the 4x400 team that also placed third.

Senior Jillian Rony claimed second with a PR of 42.98 in the 300m hurdles and was part of the 4x100 relay team that claimed a fourth and was also a leg in the third-place 4x400 relay team.

Junior Peyton Korytkowski was the starting leg in the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams that both claimed third place and also placed ninth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 45.44 and a 12th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.03.

The Rams had two athletes compete in the pole vault, with junior Shelby Korytkowski claiming ninth with a jump of 10-03 and sophomore Morgan Vargo claiming 13th with a vault of 10-03. Vargo also had a good day in the pit, earning sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 17-09.75 and was also part of the fourth-place 4x100 relay team.

The Ram relay teams placed as follows:

4X100 team of Grace Gohl, Morgan Vargo, Abby Nash and Jillian Roney claimed fourth with a time of 48.55

4X200 team of Peyton Korytkowski, Kate Zang, Abby Nash and Taylor Korytkowski placed third with a time of 1:40.49

4X400 team of Peyton Korytkowski, Kate Zang, Jillian Roney and Taylor Korytkowski placed third with a time of 3:53.63

4x800 team of Karlie Gardner, Elizabeth Bennett, Lexie Allshouse and Emma Everhatr-Deckard placed 10th with a time of 9:40.52

The Rams finished out an impressive season that showed plenty of hard work, dedication and sacrifice to not only themselves, but their teammates. Congratulations to the team, head coach Randy VanderVeen and the assistant coaches on an incredible season filled with memories and accomplishments.
