Rockford Downs Allendale 9-3

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Little League Majors All-Star team opened bracket play, Monday, July 8. The team earned the right to take on Allendale in the District 9 Tournament after playing the competition during the last week of June and claiming the pool in a game played July 1. In pool play, Rockford creamed Northern Little League in their opener 25-0, and then topped Southern 12-3. The team then faced off against perennial powerhouse Georgetown and earned a heart-stopping 8-7 victory. The team clinched the pool with an 8-4 victory over Grandville to move into Finals Bracket play.

Rockford and Allendale had a back-and-forth battle in the opening innings of the game. Rockford earned a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and Allendale tied it up in the top of the second. Rockford answered in the bottom of the second pushing a run across the plate to reclaim a 2-1 lead. Allendale was able to plate two runs in the top of the third to move the game to 3-2, but Jacob Soltys smacked a double for Rockford, and a perfect sac bunt by Liam Fitzpatrick moved Soltys to third, and a ground out by Dawson Hunter plated Soltys to tie the score.

Both teams were quiet in the fourth inning, and stellar Rockford pitching and defense kept Allendale from scoring in the top of the fifth to set the stage for a huge bottom of the fifth for Rockford. An Allendale miscue put Blake Linsley on first, and an RBI double by Hunter plated a run for Rockford to move the score to 4-3. A rattled Allendale pitcher threw a wild pitch allowing Hunter to score moving the game to 5-3. Rockford wasn’t done. On two outs, Carter Zilmer walked and then singles by Cam Meier and Ty Blystone found Rockford plating two more runs to move the score to 7-3. A walk by Reed Binney and a double by Quinn Bentley earned Rockford the eventual 9-3 victory and the right to move on in the tournament.

As a team, Rockford went 8-for-29 at the plate. Soltys was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Meier was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Hunter had a double and 2 RBI. Blystone and Bentley (2B) had a hit and an RBI, and Zilmer earned two walks and Caden Joyce one free ride to help the Rockford cause.

Three Rockford pitchers shared the mound in the win. Soltys went four innings, giving up only three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out three. Bentley followed going 1.2 innings and giving up no runs on no hits and one walk, while fanning four. Jed Huyser came in for the final 1/3 of an inning and got the out.

Rockford will face off against Western at Western Field No. 1, Tuesday, July 9. Western topped Zeeland 4-2 the previous night to move forward in the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tournament.
