All-Stars Move to finals in Pool Play

GRAND RAPIDS – The 11U Rockford All-Stars (Black) team continued their winning ways in Little League District 9 Pool play with a huge win over Southern East, Tuesday, July 9. Runs were at a premium in this game, with both teams doing their best to keep runners off the base paths. In the end, Rockford was able to claim the 4-1 victory in an exciting bottom of the fifth, when the team came together to push four runs across the plate. The win gives Rockford a 2-0 record in the District 9 All-Star tournament and are one step away from claiming Pool B and moving on to bracket play in the four-pool tourney.

The score was knotted at “0” with both teams doing an impressive job pitching and fielding. Southern finally struck in the top of the fourth, able to push a run across the plate and kept the Rockford bats quiet in the bottom of the stanza. The top of the fifth found Rockford stifling Southern, with only one runner making it to first with two outs and a pop up to Eli Johnson slammed the door.

Oh, the bottom of the fifth for Rockford was a magical time for the team. Johnson was able to reach first on a Southern error and Drew Ramm stepped up to the plate with one out. Ramm turned on the first pitch and slammed a screamer to left field to plate both him and Johnson and gave Rockford the lead. But, this team was ignited and Breckton Meeuwsen fed off the excitement and smashed a fly ball to center field to earn a two-bagger. Quinn Geshel followed with a single to center, advancing Meeuwsen to third and taking second on the throw. And, still Rockford wasn’t finished. Bryce Miller and Cole Mason also notched a couple singles to move the baserunners and give Rockford the 4-1 lead. Geshel got the first two outs in the top of the sixth on the mound, causing a ground out to Mason and a ground out to Ramm at first. Carter VanderTuig took the mound for the final out of the game, causing a fly out to Geshel in right field, helping his team to a 4-1 victory.

Rockford was 9-for-25 at the plate and almost flawless in the field, with only one miscue. Ramm was 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBI, Meeuwsen was also 2-for-3 with a double and Mason was 2-for-2. Geshel, Miller and VanderTuig each gathered singles and Johnson walked twice and scored a run. Johnson pitched a no-no in his three innings, giving up only two walks while fanning five. Geshel followed and also did extremely well, going 2.2 innings and giving up only one run on one hit with no walks, while striking out one. VanderTuig followed and earned the final out of the game.

The team will now wait for the winner of the Southern East/Caledonia game, which is a rematch of each of the team’s first pool game where Southern East won by a 3-0 score. The Pool B final is scheduled for Thursday, July 11 at 6 p.m. at East Rockford Middle School.
