Rockford All-Stars Down Zeeland 9-4

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Majors All-Star team showed, “There’s no place like home,” with a decisive 9-4 win over Zeeland for the District 9 title, Thursday, July 11. Rockford jumped out early, with two runs in the first inning and two runs in the second to give themselves a nice 4-0 lead. A huge fourth inning, where the team plated five runs, allowed them to enjoy a 9-0 lead. Zeeland did their best to come back in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs, but it wasn’t enough to reel in the talented Rockford team. Rockford earned a 9-4 victory, the District 9 crown, and moved their record to a perfect 7-0 in the play offs.

Rockford showed it pays off to be aggressive on the base paths in the first inning, with the team plating two runs on just one single by Reed Binney. Rockford benefited by a Zeeland miscue and a hit by pitch to man the bases and plate the runs to close the stanza 2-0. A single by Cam Meier kicked off the second inning and sparked some Rockford offense. Jed Huyser was hit by a pitch and Ty Blystone knocked a single to load the bases and set the stage for the first score of the inning, which was acquired off of a walk by Reed Binney. A sac fly by Quinn Bentley notched another run for Rockford, moving the score to 4-0 at the end of two. Blystone, who started the game for Rockford, continued to mow down the Zeeland batters.

A walk by Tobin Pokorzynski started off a big bottom of the fourh inning for Rockford. Blystone followed with a single to put two players on. A Zeeland miscue allowed Pokorzynski to score to move the score to 5-0. On two outs, Bentley came up to the plate and on a 3-1 pitch sent the ball sailing over the center field fence to move the score to 7-0. Rockford still wasn’t done. Jacob Soltys sent a screamer to center field for a double, and a walk by Blake Linsley and Dawson Hunter put more pressure on Zeeland and Rockford registered two more runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch. The inning closed with a 9-0 Rockford lead. Zeeland answered in the top of the fifth, able to plate four runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the huge deficit and Rockford earned the 9-4 victory and the District 9 Championship.

Blystone had a big day, going 4.2 innings on the mound and giving up four runs on four hits and only two walks, while striking out nine. Linsley did a fine job with relief, going 1.1 innings, giving up only two hits and one walk and no runs. Rockford went 6-for-21 at the plate as a team. Blystone went 2-for-3, Binney went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Bentley went 1-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI. Meier and Soltys also notched a hit. Patient at the plate, Linsley, Hunter, Meier, Pokorzynski, Blystone, Binney and Bentley all earned a free ride during the game.

The team now moves on to the state tournament, where they will face off against the Little League Michigan District Champions. The tournament features a Round-Robin format in early games.
