ROCKFORD – The Minors (Black) All-Star team showed they aren’t quitters in a game played, Thursday, July 11. Rockford found themselves looking at the wrong end of a 3-0 score against Southern West in their District 9 Pool E opener. They were able to plate one, but their opposition answered in the top of the inning with one of their own. Showing plenty of heart and never giving up, Rockford kept whittling away at the lead, with Southern answering back until they reached the bottom of the sixth inning. Rockford was looking at an 8-3 score, but that didn’t faze them as they showed plenty of heart and talent to battle their way through the inning. The team was able to push three players over the plate, giving their loyal fans plenty to cheer about, but fell just short and lost by an 8-6 score.
Rockford plated a run in the bottom of the third with Harrison Snoeyink smacking a double to right field. Snoeyink advanced to third on a passed ball from the rattled Southern pitcher. A perfectly executed sac bunt by Connor Henshaw moved Snoeyink across the plate for the first Rockford score. In the bottom of the fourth, Carson Cavner kicked off the inning in a huge way, smacking a triple to right field. He followed by scoring on a wild pitch. Brady Ramm knocked a single and promptly stole second. He moved to third on a passed ball and followed that with a score on another passed ball to give Rockford another run and move the score to 4-3 at the end of the inning.
Unfortunately, Southern plated two runs both in the fifth and the sixth to pull away with an 8-3 lead, but that didn’t quell the Rockford spirits. Davin Downing earned a free ride and Ramm rapped a hard single to third. A number of wild pitches allowed both players to find home plate and move the score to 8-5. On two outs, Elliott Proppe smacked a single to right field, and was followed by walks by Snoeyink and Owen Rigley, with Proppe scoring on a wild pitch to move the score to 8-6.
The team was 7-for-24 at the plate, with Cavner and Ramm setting pace for Rockford going 2-for-3, with Cavner rapping a triple. Snoeyink (2B), Brady Pelak and Proppe had a hit apiece. Downing and Rigley earned walks to help the Rockford cause. Three hurlers shared pitching duties, with Snoeyink, Pelak and Ramm all working hard to keep Rockford in the game.
The team plays Northview tonight, Friday, July 12, at Northview, with play beginning at 6 p.m.
