Johnson throws shutout, Meeuwsen goes yard...twice

TAYLOR – The Rockford 11U All-Stars opened Pool Play in the Little League State Tournament, Saturday, July 27, in a big way. The team showed plenty of talent as they put together a flawless game committing no errors, showed strong bats and impressive pitching in the 5-0 victory over Tecumseh Little League. The win moves their record to 8-1.

Eli Johnson pitched another gem for the team, going four innings, giving up just one hit and one walk, while striking out five. Quinn Geshel came on in relief and did a fantastic job protecting the shut out, tossing 1.2 innings, giving up no hits and striking out three. Grahm Beickman came in for the final out and registered a strike out on the first batter he faced. The team notched a run in the top of the fourth when Breckton Meuwsen went yard to left field to kick off the inning and move the score to 1-0. Rockford had a huge top of the sixth, with back-to-back homers. Drew Ramm started it off with a screamer over the left field fence, and Meeuwsen followed with his second home run in the game to move the score to 3-0 and give the team some breathing room. Rockford wasn’t finished, however, and strung singles from Quinn Geshel, Manny Abro, and Mason Plain to rack up two more runs and move the score to 5-0.

Rockford was 8-for-25 at the plate as a team, with Meeuwsen going 2-for 3 with two home runs and two RBI, and Drew Ramm also was 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Plain had a hit and an RBI and Nehemiah Kusreau, Abro and Geshel had a hit apiece to pace Rockford.

The All-Stars will continue Pool Play facing off against Marysville at 10 a.m., Sunday, July 28, on Taylor Northwest Little League Field No. 1.
