ROCKFORD – The Rockford freshman football team started their season at The Ted, Wednesday, Aug. 28, with a 27-6 victory. The Rams took on the junior varsity St. Johns Redwings to kick off their 2019 campaign, and despite a marked size differential, cruised to the win. Head coach Tim Saur’s team looked strong on both sides of the ball, despite it being early in the season.
The Rams hit pay dirt first in the game at the 6:39 mark, with Tyler Hoek rushing up the right side to the end zone. The Noah Lepzinski PAT was good, and the Rams owned a 7-0 lead. The Rockford defense did a great job of keeping the Redwings on their own side of the field, not letting them break the 50-yard line plane the entire first half. That allowed the offense to put up some serious yards in the first half, with another Ram rush moving the score to 13-0. A missed PAT kept the score there. The highlight of the first half was a beautiful 80-yard run by Tyler Hoek at the 2:11 mark to move the score to 20-0 after the successful PAT. The Rams headed into the locker room with a comfortable lead.
The second half gave the Rams a jolt as the Redwings were able to quickly score in the opening of the third quarter with a 67-yard scamper at the 9:41 mark to move the score to 20-6. The Redwings were unable to convert on the PAT and it showed to be prophetic for the rest of the game, with the Rams shutting down their scoring opportunities.
Rockford’s final scoring drive of the game started at the 8:41 mark of the fourth quarter. The Rams ate up plenty of time as they started at their own 26 and slowly worked their way up the field. It was Ayden Hewer who got the nod for the 4-yard rush to the end zone to move the score to 27-6.
The Rams will now prepare to take on Lowell, Thursday, Sept. 5 at 4:30 p.m. in an away contest.
