ROCKFORD – The Rams varsity swim & dive team hosted Zeeland West, Tuesday, Sept. 17, and gave their fans an exciting meet. The Rams had just come off a nice 120-64 win over Forest Hills Central and were ready to take on the Dux. Unfortunately, the Rams fell in a close one to Zeeland by a 100-86 score. Rockford did shine in a number of events and left it all in the pool as a team, claiming two of the three relays and 7 of the 12 events to make it a close meet, but it wasn’t enough to upend Zeeland’s victory.
The Rams kicked off the event with all four cylinders, landing a first-place finish in the 200-Yard Medley Relay, with Sara Kraus, Josie Geers, Rachel Gamm, and Masy Folcik combining to clock in at 1:49.85 to touch the wall first. Event 2 – the 200-Yard Freestyle - found Ram Ashley Lund speeding to a first with a time of 1:56.78. Rockford’s Oliver Harmsen claimed fifth with a time of 2:03.70. Kraus landed first in the 200-Yard IM with an impressive time of 2:09.14, eclipsing second place by more than seven seconds. Geers placed fourth and Ally Kinstle placed sixth in the event. Folcik claimed first in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.49, with Taylor Scott landing third and Paige Beers placing fifth. The meet then turned to diving, where Jessica Axman landed fourth with a total of 156.60, and Paige Clauser landing fifth with 155.90, and Ava Laufersky placing sixth with 152.10.
The 100-Yard Butterfly saw Rachel Gamm land first with a time of 59.47, with Alex Fisher placing fourth and Gabrielle Shirley finishing fifth. The 100-Yard Freestyle was an exciting race with Zeeland just edging out Kraus, whose time was 54.43. The Rams also claimed fourth with Beers and fifth with Harmsen posting times good enough to edge out the Zeeland swimmers. Ashley Lund was the top Ram finisher in the gut-breaking 500-Yard Freestyle, placing third with a time of 5:23.82, with Kinstle following in fourth place and Marie Prawdzik finishing sixth.
The 200-Yard Freestyle Relay found Kraus, Beers, Folcik and Lund combining for a first-place finish with a time of 1:39.63. Gamm earned a second-place finish in the 100-Yard Backstroke clocking in at 1:00.19, with Alex Fisher landing fourth and Faith Ten Eyck placing fifth. Folcik landed another first in the 100-Yard Breaststroke 1:03.50. Geers and Taylor Scott placed third and fourth, respectively. The final event of the evening, the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, found Rockford placing third with Beers, Fisher, Gamm and Lund putting up a finish time of 3:47.75.
Next up for the Rams is a home meet against Hudsonville, Thursday, Sept. 26, with a start time of 6 p.m.
