This weekend Rockford is hosting their final water polo tournament before Districts next weekend in Zeeland. Ten teams including the Rams are fighting it out in the water. Friday afternoon, the Rams faced off against Grand Haven. It was a tough contest with Grand Haven staying within two the first three periods. Late in the fourth quarter, the score tied up and it went to a shoot-out to secure the win for Rockford.
Scorers for the home team were Kyle Dedert (5), Elijah Chino (4), Nate Hopkins (3) and Hudson Verwys (2). Eight of these girls were assists by Hopkins (3), Nate Cheney (2) and Chino, Nick Deugaw and Brenden Saur with one apiece. The boys stole the ball 11 times and those were spread out among Hopkins, Chino, Dedert, Saur, Nolan Graalman, Drew Bargewell, Christian Wagen and Matthew Weber.
The game finished in an 11-11 tie so final shootout was exciting for the crowd. All three Rams shooters were able to score. Hopkins, Chino and Verwys helped obtain the 14-13 win, but it was Ben Schuchardts block of the opponent’s final shot that secured it for the team. Schuchardt was also able to block 14 shots on goal during the match.
The final game of Friday night for Rockford was against Upper Arlington of Ohio. While the visiting team really pushed the Rams and kept them swimming back and forth, in the end they were no match the home team.
At the end of the first quarter the score was 5-1 thanks to goals by Hopkins, Chino and Dedert. In the second quarter each of that trio scored another goal to make it 8-2. At the end of the third it was 8-3 and Hopkins and Matt Weber each scored in the fourth to make the final score 10-4. Teamwork was a big factor in the win and Verwys was able to assists 3 goals. Hopkins, Chino, Graalman, Wagen and Weber each had 1. Among the 10 Rockford steals, Dedert led with 3 and Chino, Cheney, Deugaw, Graalman, Bargewell, Cade Dorer and Weber grabbed one of those.
Goalie Ben Schuchardt was able to block 17 goals and Logan Harris stopped two.
Rockford looks forward to two games on Saturday with Game 3 against Groves starting at 1 p.m. and Game 4 against East Grand Rapids at 6:50 p.m. Both matches should be exciting match ups. Head over to the Rockford pool and see what polo is all about and support the home team.
