ROCKFORD – The varsity water polo team closed the door on their regular season in a big way this past weekend during their Rocktober Invitational. The Rams claimed all four games, winning two on Friday night over Grand Haven and Upper Arlington, of Ohio. The team continued their winning ways on Saturday, topping Groves High School 13-5, and closed the tourney downing East Grand Rapids 11-2.
Rams head coach Craig Peterman was happy with his team’s performance after topping Groves.
“It was a great all-around win,” he shared. “The team played exceptionally well against a team we have not seen this entire season.”
The Rams held Groves to zero, while scoring three in the first quarter and added to their lead in the second stanza to head into halftime with a 5-2 lead. The Rams’ offense hit on all four cylinders in the second half, scoring four goals in the third, and four in the fourth to claim the victory 13-5.
Elijah Chino scored an incredible eight goals in the game, and also added two steals. Kyle Dedert followed with three goals, two assists, and two steals. Nate Hopkins and Jordan Miller each tallied a goal, with Hopkins adding two assists and Miller adding two steals. Hudson Verwys and Brenden Saur added an assist each and Cade Dorer had a steal. Keeper Ben Schuchardt not only tallied 10 saves for the game, he also kicked in two assists and a steal.
The Rams then faced off against East Grand Rapids for their night game and enjoyed another lopsided victory by topping the Pioneers 11-2. Rockford left little doubt who would win, closing the first half with a 6-1 lead. Six Rams scored goals, with Chino again pacing the Rams with four. Also finding the back of the net were Dedert and Saur each registering two, with Verwys, Hopkins and Nate Cheney adding one. Hopkins led the team with four steals, with Saur and Nick Deugaw tallying two. Shuchardt led the team in assists with two. Schuchardt was also solid in the net, tallying 11 saves on the night.
“It was a great team win,” Peterman said after the team’s final victory over East Grand Rapids. “The guys had a fabulous weekend going 4-0 after last weekend’s rough turnout.”
The Rams now prepare for MWPA West Region District competition, which is Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26, at Zeeland.
