BROOKLYN, MICH. – The Rams girls cross country team traveled to Michigan International Speedway, Saturday, Nov. 2, and competed against the best in the state of Michigan for the MHSAA State Finals. It was the final leg of their 2019 season and the Rams did well, placing 15th out of 28 teams. It was the exclamation point on a season that found a young Rams team improving as they worked their way through the season.
They kicked off the season with a third place in the Early Bird Invitational and honed their skills to earn a first-place finish in the Allendale Falcon Invite in the Scarlet division at the end of September. The Rams claimed second at the end of the regular season in the OK Red Conference Meet, peaking at the perfect time. They carried that momentum with them to the MHSAA Regional where they placed runner-up. In the State Finals, the Rams were able to put together another big day and landed 15th with Ram sophomore Bailey Ewen pacing the team.
Ewen led the team, just as she did all year, placing 65th out of the top 257 runners in the state of Michigan with a time of 19:27.6. She was followed by freshman Jessica Harney (123) who clocked in at 20:01.5. Junior Elise VanStensel (129) followed closely with a time of 20:05.3. Freshman Emma Flanders timed in at 20:09.1 to earn 138th, and Anna Tracey (168) rounded out the top five finishers for the Rams. Freshman Nora Hoekert (191) and sophomore Hailey Fike (208) show that the future of Ram cross country is promising with all seven runners able to return for another season.
