ROCKFORD – The Rockford Rams girls varsity basketball team played host to the Rangers of Forest Hills Central, Tuesday, Dec. 18. The Rams gave the crowd plenty of thrills as they tied the game in regulation and then claimed the victory by a 42-39 score in overtime. The win moves the Lady Rams’ record to 4-1 on the season.
It wasn’t easy. The Ranger were able to blast off to a 12-1 lead, but the Rams get credit for not panicking – and not giving up. They whittled away at the lead until the halftime buzzer showed a 21-17 Ranger lead. Rockford continued their onslaught in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers 12-4 to cut into the deficit and earned a tie to cause the game to go into overtime.
Down the stretch, Rockford point guard Hannah Morgan came up big, hitting a monster 3-pointer to give the Rams a 1-point lead, but the game wasn’t over, as the Rangers answered quickly with a basket of their own. Anna Glynn helped the Ram cause in the end with a 3-point play with seconds remaining to help earn the Ram victory
“FHC came out very strong and jumped out to a 12-1 lead,” said head coach Brad Wilson. “I thought our girls did a great job of responding in the second quarter.”
Glynn paced the Rams with 13 points, Syd Reinke tallied nine points, and Madi Kleefisch netted seven points.
“We made some key adjustments, and we had a number of girls step up big and execute some key plays down the stretch,” concluded Wilson. “This is a huge win for our team and will hopefully give us some confidence moving forward.”
The Rams will travel to Wayland for the Holiday Tournament, Sat. Dec. 22. Play begins at 1 p.m.
