The Rockford Rams Varsity Hockey Club earned three wins last week to move to 5-1-0 on the season (3-1-0 in OK Rue divisional play). After dropping the season opener, the Rams have exploded over the last five games, manhandling opponents by a combined score of 36 to 7, en route to a five-game winning streak.
On Wednesday, Nov. 28, the Ice Rams hosted OK Rue rival Mona Shores at Griff’s Ice House. This game was all Rockford. The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and continued the pressure with four more goals in the second period. Mona Shores was unable to solve Rams goaltender Zac Sherman and the game ended at the end of the middle frame, per MHSAA mercy rules, with the Rams holding an 8-0 lead. Sherman was perfect in net, earning the shutout win.
Rockford returned to Griff’s on Friday, Nov. 30, to battle East Kentwood. The Rams would take a 1-0 lead in the first period, before scoring five more unanswered goals in the second period. The Rams would take a 7-0 lead early in the third period before EK would net their first and only goal of the game. When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read: Rockford 7, East Kentwood 1. Netminder Sherman again recorded the victory.
The Rams opened December play with a home contest against OK Rue opponent West Ottawa. Rockford entered the game on a four-game winning streak; West Ottawa entered the game on a three-game winning streak. The Panthers made an early statement, scoring the first two goals of the game. Rockford would answer by scoring 7 of the next 8 goals of the game. Late in the third period, Rockford—holding a 7-3 lead—would fight off a late West Ottawa surge to secure the 7-5 win. Goaltender Sherman once again claimed the win for the Rams.
Upcoming games: The Ice Rams (5-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 OK Rue) host Toledo St. Francis on Friday, Dec. 7 at 6pm at Griff’s Ice House, before traveling to Muskegon to face Reeths Puffer, Friday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at LC Walker Arena and Mona Shores on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. at Lakeshore Sports Centre.
