Abby Ducharme and Emily Ramsay
The 2018 Rockford varsity tennis team ended a successful season with a 17-3 record, after beating several teams in the top ten, and taking second place in both the OK Red Conference, and Regional competition, that took place, Saturday, May 17. West Ottawa claimed first with 27 points, the Rams claimed second with 26, and Hudsonville was a distant third with 15 points.
The Lady Rams are now headed to the MHSAA State Finals Tournament in Midland, ranked as No. 7 in the state. For the No. 1 doubles team Abby Ducharme and Emily Ramsay, it's a chance to continue their winning streak; they wrapped up the regular season undefeated, then won first place in the Conference and Regional tournaments. Ramsay and Ducharme are two of the team's eight returning players. Ramsay is the only sophomore Ram, with Sydney Sly the lone senior player.
Juniors Ducharme, Delanie Riebschleger, Alayna Bowman, Chloe VanEck, Delaney Emerson, and Whitney Howard formed close relationships as teammates last season, both on and off the courts. That bond has only strengthened this year as the veteran players welcomed junior Kelsey Howard, and freshmen Maddie Maxson, Zuzu Trottier, and Brooke Dahlke. Their joy and laughter off the court was matched equally by their intensity on it.
While the team has focused on winning one point at a time...one match, one tournament... the goal was always to get back to the MHSAA State Championships.
They'll do that this weekend.. cheering each other on, boosting one another's spirits. Play starts Friday, June 1 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
