ROCKFORD – The varsity water polo team played host for their annual “Rock-tober” Tournament and enjoyed the weekend, going 4-0 for the event. On Friday, Oct. 12 Rockford topped East Grand Rapids 12-6, and dominated Holt/E.L. 20-6. On Saturday, the Rams downed Ann Arbor Huron 18-10, and finished the tournament by beating St. Xavier (Ohio) 15-4. The wins move the Rams’ record to 31-5 on the year.
In the 12-6 EGR victory, Rockford saw eight players score, and also combined for seven assists and 15 steals for the win. Keeper Ben Schuchardt tallied 12 saves in the game. Hudson VerWys rocked the back of the net four times, and recorded one assist and two steals. Brenden Saur registered two goals and three steals. Kyle Arend, Elijah Chino, Gavin Saur, Kyle Dedert, Zach Burns, and Matthew Weber each notched a goal apiece. Also tallying steals were VerWys and Chino with two, and Arend, Nate Cheney, Dedert, and Burns with a steal apiece.
The Rams dominated the Holt/E.L. 20-6, with Chino registering a huge game for Rockford, slamming eight balls into the net, tallied three assists, and four steals. Arend also enjoyed a big night, tallying four goals, two assists, and four goals. Dedert registered three goals, and one assist, and VerWys and Burns each notched two goals apiece, with Burns also recording three steals. Boede Mitchell added two steals to the Rockford cause. Schuchardt and Miller shared duties in the frame, with Schuchardt tallying eight saves, and Mitchell registered four.
Chino notched another eight goals against Ann Arbor Huron, he also added one assist, and four steals to the Rockford stats. Burns found the back of the net six times, and had two assists and four steals. Arend hit two goals, two assists, and one steal. Gavin Saur had a big game on both sides of the ball, tallying a goal, three assists, and eight steals. Dedert recorded a goal, and an assist. Schuchardt registered 11 saves in the game.
In the final game against St. Xavier, the Rams slammed home 15 goals, 11 assists, and 13 steals as a team. Both Chino and Burns recorded five goals each, with Chino notching two assists, and Burns tallying four steals. Arend had two goals, two assists, and one steal, with Gavin Saur, Dedert, and Boede Mitchell each registering a goal. Keeper Schuchardt recorded 10 saves in goal.
The Rams will be competing in the MWPA West Region District 2 Championships, Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20.
