ROCKFORD – The Rams varsity water polo team continued their season with two dominant wins on the road over the past week. Rockford faced off against Grand Haven, Monday, Sept. 10, and earned a 15-3 victory. They then traveled to Jenison and enjoyed another solid win, topping the Wildcats with a 13-3 score. The Rams are still ranked No. 2 in the state with an impressive 17-2 record, while Hudsonville still holds on to their No. 1 status.
The Rams strung together a stellar all-around game against the Buccaneers, tallying 15 goals, with 10 assists, and a staggering 25 steals. Those 15 goals were scored on 19 attempts showing a complete dominance of the offense. Rockford tallied 5 goals in the first two quarters, closing the half with a 5-1 lead. The third quarter saw the Rams hitting the back of the net 8 times to move the score to 13-2 at the end of the stanza. Rockford put two more up on the board in the fourth, closing out the game with a 15-3 victory.
Gavin Saur had a huge game, leading the Rams on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, recording 4 goals and six steals. Both Kyle Arend and Elijah Chino registered 3 goals. Zach Burns netted 2, and Brenden Saur, Nolan Graalman and Brendan Chaudoir each tallied 1 goal apiece. Arend, Chino and Kyle Dedert each registered 4 steals. Graalman and Burns each had 2 steals, and Brenden Saur and Nick Deaugaw also had a steal each to round out the Ram defense. Ben Schuchardt and Boede Mitchell shared time in the frame, with Schuchardt recording 7 saves, and Mitchell tallying one in the fourth quarter. Schuchardt also registered a steal during his time in the pool.
The Jenison match found the Rams come out in a blaze, finding the back of the net seven times in the first quarter alone before the Wildcats even knew what hit them. Rockford added 4 more goals in the second quarter to close out the half with an 11-0 score. The match was the perfect opportunity to get plenty of Rams valuable playing time, with seven total Rockford players scoring a goal before the end of the game. At the conclusion, Rockford earned a 13-3 victory.
Tallying goals for the Rams were Burns with 4, Arend, Chino, and Gavin Saur with 2 apiece, with Dedert, Brenden Saur, and Nate Chaney registering a goal each. The Rams registered 15 steals on the night, with Gavin Saur and Dedert leading the way with 3 each. Arend, Chino and Matthew Weber each registered 2, and Brenden Saur, Boede Mitchell, and Samuel Radtke each tallied 1 steal. Schuchardt and Mitchell shared keeper duties again, posting 6 and 3 saves, respectively.
The Rams will take on Grandville at home, Monday, Sept. 17, and then travel to West Ottawa, Wednesday, Sept. 19, and then compete in the Zeeland Invitational, Friday and Saturday.
