GRAND RAPIDS – The Rockford varsity wrestling team traveled on Saturday, Dec. 15 to take on the best in the Kent County Wrestling Championships, which featured 22 teams at Forest Hills Central High School. The Rams were able to net second place with a score of 209.5 points. Lowell claimed first place with 315.5 points, with Sparta claiming third with 182.5 points. Caledonia claimed fourth with 139.5 points, and Cedar Springs placed fifth with 130.5 points.

“I am pleased with our second-place finish, Lowell (#1 in Div. 2) is a very talented team and catching them would have been a pretty tall order,” said Rockford head coach Brian Richardson. “Placing 11 of 13 wrestlers shows good consistency and overall depth throughout our line-up. That being said, I really think this was not our best effort. By going 4-7, we did not finish the final round the way we are capable of. It is only December and we know we a very long way to get to where we need to be, but we do have strong leadership in place that can definitely move us forward.”

Ram Trenton Wachter (11-0), was able to claim the title at the 130-pound weight class. Rockford teammates who claimed runner-up status were: Connor White (145), Cole Gleason (171) and Tyler Waterstrat (189). The following wrestlers rounded out Ram placers: freshman Brysonn Aulbach, fourth place (103), senior Jack Tadych, fourth (135), senior Jack Richardson, fifth (152), senior Jacob Simkins (125) and junior Evan Kaser, sixth (140).

“I was very impressed with the way both of our sophomores wrestled Saturday,” continued Richardson. “Trenton Wachter (1st place at 130 pounds) is wrestling with confidence in every aspect of his game right now and he is showing no fear in his offensive attack. The same can be said for Cole Gleason (2nd at 171 pounds), he has a motor that can’t be stopped, his only loss on the day was to a nationally-ranked wrestler that has committed to CMU. I also felt that seniors Blake Gordon and Taylor Green (both third at 160-pounds and 215-pounds, respectively, wrestled extremely well. Both of them seem to be getting better every single time they step on the mat. Their confidence is showing and that a great thing to see. Fellow seniors Connor White and Tyler Waterstrat, both turned in very impressive performances as they wound up as runners up at 145 and 189, respectively.”

Next up for the Rams is a road trip to Brighton to compete in their Quad, Wednesday, Dec. 19.
