The Sparta-Rock rugby team capped off their third win in eight days, Sunday, Oct. 14, with a dominating 62-0 victory over OK Red rival Grand Haven. The team got off to a slow start, but led 24-0 after the first half. Rockford’s Lexis Lamancusa, jasmine Aqel, Grace Gohl and Valencia Goldsmith all scored tries. Ashleigh Dewitt (Comstock Park) scored several tries and was 6-of-10 on her conversions. Scrum half Olivia Male (Cedar Springs) did an excellent job putting the runners into space to help them succeed. Allison Brower (Rockford) and Josephine Jones (Catholic Central) continued to improve as jumpers stealing several lineouts.
“We made several substitutions in the second half but showed our depth and the girls determination to excel and scored 38 in the second half,” shared head coach Andy Dauser.
Sparta’s Darby Eck, Chaleigh Kutzli, Katie Gale, and Ta’myah Flowers, as well as Kara Kiera’s (Northview), scored in the second half. B-Side was also victorious and did not show any signs of slowing down with a 29-0 victory and was led by Sparta freshmen prop Elena Florida.
“Elena has continued to improve week in and week out and is also pushing for playing time in the A-Side rotation,” said Dauser.
The team will travel to play Lakeview, Sunday, Oct. 21, and then will start their play-off run, Sunday, Oct. 28.
