ROCKFORD – The Rams North Rockford Middle School (NRMS) played host to the Greenville Yellow Jackets in a contest played out before a Standing-Room-Only crowd, Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Rams put together an impressive game on both sides of the ball to come out on top in a 26-6 victory. The win moves the team’s record to 1-2-1 on the season.
It didn’t take the Rams long to claim the lead, as Bujuga Lawrence’s kick-off resulted in a Yellow Jacket fumble. The Rams promptly marched it down the field and a 20-yard scamper around the left side by Colby Weston resulted in a touchdown with the clock showing 9:24. The points-after-attempt kick was blocked by Greenville and the score was 6-0. The Rams defense stymied Greenville for their possession and the Rams got the ball back at their own 45-yard line.
Rockford put together nice runs by Colin Murphy and quarterback Brody Thompson to move the ball into Greenville territory. Weston finished it up with a touchdown rush down the left sideline. Greenville was again able to block the PAT and the Rams held a 12-0 lead at the 4:02 mark in the first quarter. Rockford’s defense had another impressive showing stifling any plays attempted by Greenville, actually pinning them back to the point where the Yellow Jackets were looking at a fourth-and-20 and had to punt.
The Rams took over and had difficulty moving the ball at the beginning of their drive, drawing a number of penalty flags to keep moving them back, while closing out the first quarter and opening the second. They were looking at a second-and-20 at their own 45, when a Zander Luse run around the right side moved the ball to Greenville’s 33. The Rams strung together some impressive runs by Jaedyn Smith and Rick Beison to move the ball to the 20, but the Rams saw yellow again on an illegal procedure call to move them back. The ball was put in running back Bob Horton’s capable hands and he brought the team to the 2-yard-line. Luse made the touchdown on a rush around the right side and the score moved to 18-0. Lawrence’s PAT was good, and the Rams led 20-0 at the 6:01 mark. Greenville took almost five minutes off the clock on their next drive, with the Rams defense holding strong, but was able to keep whittling away at the yardage. The Yellow Jackets used an equal amount of pass and rush plays to finally get on the board at the 1:11 mark, moving the score to 20-6. The Rams rejected their PAT run attempt, keeping their 14-point lead heading into halftime.
The final Rams score happened early in the third quarter in the Rams’ opening drive. The touchdown happened when the Rams were working from the 48-yard-line and Thompson threw a pass into the hands of Cohen Overholt, who promptly turned and scampered the final 20 yards into the end zone for the score. There was 6:42 left on the clock and the Rams had the 26-6 lead. Both teams had a number of possessions throughout the rest of the game, but neither could make it to pay dirt. The Rams’ defense had a number of extremely impressive stands at goal line to stifle the Yellow Jackets’ scoring and Rockford was able to claim their victory.
The Rams will travel to Lowell, Wednesday, Oct. 3, to take on the Red Arrows for their next contest.
