GRAND RAPIDS – The Rockford Rams boys varsity basketball team notched another win for the season during the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament, Saturday, Dec. 22. The victory wasn’t a sure thing, with the Rams tied with Godwin Heights 27-27 at halftime, but Rockford strung together a strong second half to claim the 54-47 victory. The win moves Rockford’s record to 5-1 on the season.
“It was a great win for our team,” said Rams head coach Kyle Clough. “Godwin’s record doesn’t reflect it, but they are a tough matchup and really have some nice talent. They’ve played three OK Red teams, and Christian and Catholic Central so far, so their losses have been against really stiff competition. We feel really lucky to be able to get out of here with a win.”
Bennett Williams paced the Rams with 13 points. Sam Krist added 10, and Kaden Seelye had 9. Ashton Pokorzynski led the defense with eight rebounds. Ram point guard Brendan Schueller had a huge all-around game, adding six points, seven assists, five rebounds and no turnovers.
“We didn’t play our best today, but still found a way to get the win,” shared Clough. “That is a sign of a good team, in my opinion. On a night where our best players struggled to score, other guys picked up the slack and made big plays. Andrew Carlson, Kaden Seelye and Aidan Hieshetter gave us awesome minutes off the bench. I’m just really proud of their will to win, and selfless attitudes. They care about one thing and one thing only, winning.”
The Rams now continue in the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament, Friday, Dec. 28, against Forest Hills Central. Tip-off is 8 p.m.
