With a team full of seasoned gymnasts, including state individual champions Morgan Case and Ashley Faulkner, and four talented new freshmen, Rockford is poised for a great season. The team is currently undefeated in the conference with a 4-0 record. Rockford has held conference meets with Forest Hills, Kenowa and Lowell to date.
On the weekends, the team travels to various invitationals where gymnasts compete as a team for the top trophy, and also as individuals to win a medal and be placed among the top competitors in the meet. Gymnasts compete on four events: vault, bars, beam and floor exercise. The objective in vault is for the gymnast to cover as much height and distance in flight over the horse during two attempts where the higher of the two scores is used. Uneven Parallel Bars where one bar is higher than the other is an event where gymnasts move from one bar to the other with smooth transitions while performing routines ending in a dismount.
Balance beam is a precise event on a beam that is 16 feet in length, four feet high and only four inches wide. Gymnasts perform choreographed routines with a series of jumps, poses, dance moves and aerial tricks while staying on the beam. Floor exercise also includes a choreographed routine of dance movements, jumps, poses and tumbling to music on an area mat of 40 by 40 square feet. All-around is the total score for all four events including beam, bars, floor and vault.
The Lowell Invitational was Saturday, Jan. 12, at Lowell High School and the RHS Gymnastics Team won first place with Bloomfield Hills taking second place. Individual results include the All-Around Title which went to Ashley Faulkner with a combined score on all events of 36.675. Ashley is the returning 2018 Individual State Bar Champion and also placed first in Bars (9.05), Floor (9.65) third in Beam (9.125) and fourth in Vault (8.85). Junior Morgan Case, who is the returning Individual State Floor Champion, won first place in Vault (9.5), second place in Floor (9.45) and All-Around (35.65) and fourth in Bars (8.45).
Rounding out the top individual winners was senior Reagan Ammon who placed first in Beam (9.275), second in Vault (9.0), third in All-Around (35.4), sixth in Bars (8.25) and seventh in Floor (8.875).
