ROCKFORD - The Rockford Men’s Swim and Dive team had great competition this past week against Zeeland and Grand Haven. Despite some strong performances in the pool, the Rams fell to Zeeland 101-83, and then fell to Grand Haven 194.5-120.5.

The first meet of the week was a match up at Zeeland.  The Rams captured the opening 200 Medley Relay, but Zeeland powered back to sweep the 200 Freestyle.  Rockford’s G Saur placed 3rd in the 200 IM, and the senior trio of Conner Dedert, Kyle Arend, and Zach Burns scored 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 50 Freestyle.

The talented Ram diving team of Josh Vickery, Austin Hintz, Giera and Joshua Simkins won the 1 Meter diving, giving Rockford momentum heading into the second half of the meet.

Elijah Chino, Dwight Hua and Nate Hopkins placed 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the 100 Butterfly, followed by Conner Dedert and Arend taking 2nd and 4th in the 100 Free. Burns placed 3rd in the 500 Freestyle, with Logan Lovall and Ben Schuchardt 4th and 5th.  Rockford took 3rd in the following 200 Freestyle relay.  Conner Dedert gave the Rams a win in the 100 Backstroke, with Chino, Hua and Matthew Weber taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 100 Breaststroke.  Rockford won the final 400 Freestyle relay event of the meet, but it wasn’t enough to catch Zeeland.

Two days later, Rockford’s swim and dive team were back in the water again at Grand Haven. The Rams started this meet with a strong first place finish in the 200 Medley relay with Connor Dedert, Hua, Saur and Arend.   Burns, Schuchardt, Lovall and Chino placed 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th in the following 200 Freestyle event.  Grand Haven swept the 200 IM, but Rockford came back in the 50 Freestyle with a 2nd and 3rd place finish by Arend and Conner Dedert. Josh Vickery had a strong first place finished in the 1 Meter diving, followed by Austin Hintz taking 3rd.  Gavin Saur and Nate Hopkins took 2nd and 4th in the 100 fly, followed by Arend and Burns placing 2nd and 3rd in the 100 Free. Lovall placed 2nd in the 500 Free, keeping Rockford in the meet.

The Rams won the 100 Backstroke, with Conner Dedert taking 1st, Kyle Dedert 6th, Andrew Bargwell 7th and Cameron Trimble 8th.  Following this momentum, Chino won the 100 Breaststroke, with strong finishes by Nate Cheney, Christian Wagen and Brendan Saur. In the final 400 Freestyle relay, the Rams placed 2nd (Burns, Lovall, Saur, C Dedert) and 3rd (Hopkins, Schuchardt, Trimble, Williams).

Next up for the Rams will be West Ottawa at home on Thursday, Jan. 17.
