BAY CITY – It only took three hits. But, they were pretty huge hits! Rockford’s 10U All-Star team pulled together for six runs on three hits to top Bay City Southwestern 6-3, Thursday, Aug. 2, to claim the Little League State Semifinals.
Rockford fell behind in the top of the second when Bay City was able to plate two runs. It didn’t seem to faze this solid Rockford, team, however, as they answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Quinn Geshel reached on an error, Mason Plain walked, and Manny Abro registered a single to set the stage for plenty of excitement for Rockford fans. Chase Pitsch stepped up to the plate and on a 1-1 count smashed a line drive to left field plating all three baserunners to give Rockford the 3-2 lead. Eli Johnson came up to bat and hit a sacrifice to plate Chase to move the score to 4-2 at the end of the inning.
It was another triple in the bottom of the third inning, this time off the bat of Breckton Meeuwsen that helped Rockford score another run. Quinn hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Breckton to move the score to 5-2. Bay City was able to get one back in the top of the fourth, but that would be the last score they would have for the game. Rockford’s final score was in the bottom of the fifth, when Eli drew a walk as the first batter, and Drew Ramm and Carter VanderTuig moved him forward on the base path to third and then Eli scored on a passed ball to move the score to 6-3.
Eli pitched another gem, starting on the mound and going 5.1 innings, throwing 74 pitches with 56 of them strikes. He gave up three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out two. Drew was stellar coming on in relief and threw .2 innings giving up no runs and fanning two.
Rockford will play in the Little League State Finals against the winner of the Mt. Pleasant/Tecumseh game. The finals are scheduled for 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3.
