BAY CITY – The Rockford 10U All-Stars downed the team from Petoskey 14-9 in the Little League State quarterfinal game, and it was a heart-thumper. Rockford was ahead 12-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth when Petoskey came screaming back to plate four runs in the inning to make things a tad more intense for Rockford fans. The team scored two important runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, which was nice insurance when Petoskey made another storm in the bottom of the fifth to score another four runs to move the game to a five-run deficit.
Rockford scored five runs in the second, two in the third, and five more in the fourth, on top of the two in the later innings, to claim the victory. Petoskey had plenty of difficulty from the mound in the high-stress game, and gave Rockford plenty of baserunners on errors, walks and hit batters in the top of the second inning. But, in the top of the fourth it was Rockford’s hot bats that earned the runs. Eli Johnson, Drew Ramm, Carter VanderTuig, Breckton Meeuwsen, and Quinn Geshel had five consecutive singles in the hit parade, and all five scored to move the score to 12-1 at the top of the inning. Petoskey answered in the bottom of the fourth, to get some of the runs back, but Rockford kept the lead throughout the game.
Rockford was 11-for-27 at the plate, with Mason Plain going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Eli was 2-for-3 with a triple and Breckton was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Drew, Niam Kusreau, Carter, Quinn, and Daniel Toole all had a hit apiece. Rockford utilized the talents of five pitchers on the mound, with Mason earning the win.
Rockford will now play the winner of the Taylor and Bay City game for the state semifinals, Thursday, Aug. 2, at 4 p.m.
