BAY CITY – The 10U All-Star took to the field in their first pool game and showed dominance with a 10-0 victory over West Portage, Saturday, July 28. Rockford put together an all-around gem, in the field, on the mound, and at the plate to claim the win in five innings in their opening game in the Little League State Tournament.
Rockford opened up their score parade in the bottom of the second inning, pushing five runs over the plate. Carter started out the stanza with a walk, and was followed by two singles by Chase and Mason to move the score to 2-0. A fielder’s choice from Manny and a passed ball pushed Mason across the plate to move the score to 3-0. Back-to-back walks by Bryce and Quinn set the stage for Eli, who smacked a double to center for two RBI, with the score changing to 5-0 to close the inning.
Rockford earned some more base runners in the third, reaching on an error and then Breckton getting hit by a pitch, and a single by Cole, who earned an RBI. Two passed balls found Breckton and Mason plating two more runs to push the score to 8-0 at the end of the inning. Rockford closed the door on the game in the bottom of the fifth, with Carter starting the inning with a double to left. Breckton singling to center, to advance Carter to third, with Carter scoring on a wild pitch to move the score to 9-0. Manny singled to left field to plate Breckton to end the game in a 10-0 mercy.
Eli was stellar from the mound – going 4.2 innings and giving up 0 runs on just two hits and one walk, while fanning seven. Carter came on in relief for the final out in the top of the fifth, and caused a ground out on a 2-2 pitch. As a team, Rockford was 7-for-22 at the plate, with Mason going 1-for 2 and Eli going 1-for-3, and both recording two RBI apiece. Cole was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Carter tallied a double, and Breckton, Chase, and Manny all recorded singles, with Manny recording an RBI.
Rockford continues pool play tomorrow, Sunday, July 29, facing off against Beach, from District 12 at 4 p.m.
