ROCKFORD – After battling many weather postponements, and a four-loss run against conference foes Hudsonville, West Ottawa, Grandville and Grand Haven, the Rams varsity boys basketball team has righted the ship during their annual Coaches vs. Cancer game. Rockford claimed a home victory against Caledonia, Saturday, Feb. 9, by a 51-43 score to move their overall record to a healthy 10-6, and their record in the competitive OK Red to 5-4.
“This was a much-needed win for our team,” shared Ram head coach Kyle Clough. “The guys dug in, made a nice run in the third quarter to separate, and we hung on down the stretch.”
The Rams were holding on to a four-point 23-19 score at the half. In the third, they did, indeed open it up with a 42-28 lead at the close of the stanza. The Rams continued to play well in the fourth and closed the game with a 51-43 victory.
“Ashton (Pokorzynski) got going again, and that was a big boost for our team,” said Clough. “When he’s played well this season, we’ve been a really hard team to beat. Also, I thought Brendan (Schueller) had a really complete game. He’s starting to score a little more, for five steals, and is still doing a nice job of taking care of the ball for us. And Nate (Bareno) was really solid, as he usually is.”
Pokorzynski paced the Rams with 17 points and three rebounds. Schueller tallied 13 points, five steals, and three assists. Bareno registered 12 points and seven rebounds.
“After losing four tough, close conference games in a row, this was really important for us to find a win,” concluded Clough. “This league is tough, and we don’t take winning for granted. Really excited to get our 10th win, and looking forward to some more great basketball in the upcoming weeks. This is the first time we’ve reached double digit wins since 2012-13 season.”
The Rams take on the Grand Haven Bucs, Tuesday, Feb. 12, in an away contest – weather permitting.
