Ram Cagers Topple East Kentwood

ROCKFORD – The Rockford varsity boys basketball team played host to East Kentwood, Friday, Feb. 15, and sent them packing with a 77-63 loss. The team celebrated Senior Night with the big victory and moved their conference record to 6-4 and their overall record to 11-6.

The Rams celebrated senior players Nate Bareno, Gabe Holman, Ashton Pokorzynski, and Bennett Williams prior to the start of the game.

“It was a really special night for our seniors,” shared Ram head coach Kyle Clough. “We have four great young men, who have given our coaches, their teammates and this program everything they have for four years. To be able to honor them and play for them is always a special opportunity on the last home Friday night game. We love those guys and are thankful they’ve represented the Rams the right way.”

The Rams led at halftime 45-32 and won by almost the same margin when the final buzzer sounded.

“It was a big-time win for our team,” said Clough. “East Kentwood had been playing really well, and won five of their last six games. So, for us to play that well, and win in a convincing fashion, is a testament to these players and their continued hard work.”

The Ram offense had a big night, with five players registering double digits in points. Nate Bareno paced the Rams with 21 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Brendan Schueller tallied 14 points, and three assists, while Sam Krist added 12 points and four rebounds. Ashton Pokorzynski recorded 10 points and seven rebounds, and Bennett Williams tallied 10 points, two assists and three steals.
“We talked Thursday in practice about writing their story and making sure the last few chapters were going to end the way they wanted,” shared Klough. “The story they picked was to finish strong, play free and see if we can be a team good enough to win a district in two weeks. Tonight was a nice first step.”

The Rams will take on Red foe Hudsonville at home, Tuesday, Feb. 19, to complete their conference schedule. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
